South Island Trip 2021 Greymouth, Kumara Races & Shantytown, Wanganui River and Harihari

Heading towards our favourite parkup by the Surf Club on the Cobden Breakwater we heard on the news of recent activity where motorhomers on the Cobden Breakwater were having people trying to set fires under their campers at night while they slept. However we choose to just go and parkup with no problems after dark!
I told these out of town surfers the local surfers that I have seen, got into the water further down the breakwater.
They managed to find a few good waves before calling it a day.

The next morning the locals turned up and showed me how they get into the water
.....geez...guts mate!

We headed off to the Kumara Races...where else but in Kumara...stupid!

These Races had not been held for three years due to weather issues,
but this was a cracker day on the West Coast.

These two next shots show the zoom ability of my new little compact camera.
If you focus on that white tent in the distance (last bay of the grandstand, in the centre of the photo)
And now I’ve zoomed in...pretty good eh!

The world famous (on the Coast) Kokotaihi Band getting ready to play.
I asked how often do they practise and was told...never....they just gig.
These days members are all over the South Island with members coming from The Grey Valley, Nelson, and Christchurch.
They never know the exact make up of the band till whoever turns up!

Isn’t it great to see a crowd like this and not a Covid 19 mask in sight!

An iconic barbers shop front in Greymouth, beckoned me to take its photo.
We were on the way to Shanty Town. I last visited about 40 years ago.

Below you could mine for Gold....and keep what you found!

You could even put some Gold filling in your teeth! Drilling for gold!

If you are armless or legless, this is the place to come too!

If you have the readies in old money.....cash only!

If you have two arms and two legs this is the machine for you!

But by far, this poster on the wall tells it like it was in the late 1800’s
Not allot has changed in this regard today in 2021.
Next stop, Hokitika, this is the Greenstone (Jade) factory/shop, which was very quiet!

The iconic clock tower...the sky is always this blue on the coast
When its not raining!
The pathway to the beach, looking rather bookish..the wind fair whistles through here!

An unexpected stop in Harihari...right beside the road is a maze..
In fact it’s AMAZING.

Done by a local woman called Helena, who was on the job doing more painting.

She told me she was trying to get the Christchuch city council to do a project like this in the Chch Square.

Some of the squares are messages done by tourists passing through.
And here is the very lady....
Helena you are a superstar with vision, persistence and focus.
A rare combination...you are my hero!

I have cut allot of photos out of this particular blog because it simply wouldn’t load over the internet going down the coast.
Hopefully we are now back on track, as there are many wonderfull happenings to report in the next blogs.

That’s all folks for this un.

As usual...stay safe, have fun and be creative.
