Jimu Blog #7 South Island 2021 Oamaru, and Timaru.

The weather was improving as I headed for Oamaru, we have been there before and knew the A and P Showgrounds is a great spot to park up

The Victorian Precinct is definitely the place to go in Oamaru

Also famous for its club of Penny Farthing riders

And weird old world of Victorian brickabrack, and also the home of Steam Punk HQ and  its related fashion.

The street behind the precinct, has this community garden

Which is really good to see.....

I have blogged about Steam Punk before so, not so much this time.

The Wharf in the distance is an older now unsafe and barred off from public use...

But these fellows have taken roost in huge numbers.

Below is an unsual Cafe, popular with locals and tourists alike!

My favourite shop in the precinct is the grain store gallery,
displaying work by Donna Demente, who had been a previous Wearable Arts winner.

There is a lot to take in and well worth a brousing stroll.

There were a few local (NZ) tourists about,
tho the London Double decker is a little out of character,
It did bring some colour

I did enjoy busking down this street

And there is a gelato shop very close (handy)

I also checked out the Oamaru Menz Shed,
which is a smallish affair in the grounds of the rubbish dump near the recycle shop
With about 15 members, the shed some days is very quiet,
and they are having a meeting soon to see where they go from here!

A nice old (white metal bearing) Sagar jointer

Terry (below) is one of the main men and after talking to him for 20 minutes,
He remembered we did a carving workshop together in the 1980’s
Small world Eh!

Just as I was leaving the A and P showgrounds I noticed some activity in the far corner,
It was the local dog owners club, having a fundraiser event and dog obedience event.

With itchy feet once again I headed north on state Highway 1,
Next stop was Caroline bay right in the heart of Timaru
I like to cycle around finding things to photograph`

A relocated (twice) Lighthouse circa 1878.

At the Northern end of Caroline Bay I spotted an interesting outcrop of rocks

Which became more interesting ....

Most unusual...I reckon!

I did stop briefly to check out the big Motorhome sales yard in Ashburton, as I’d heard they has sold a lot of stock...because of Covid 19!
And yes I’ve never seen this much room in their yard...

Next stop was Christchurch, I knew there was a Busking Festival called Bread and Circus
and motored right into the city to check that out!

This fine lady gets jammed into this glass box and does hula hoops
That’s what all the hoopla is all about!

Fraser Hooper a clown extraordinaire....

Very funny and interactive with the audience....

what he does with kids pulled/coaxed out of the audience is pure comedy and magical.

Paul Klauss, has a very high energy show

With considerable skills
With 6 ball juggling and fine balancing tricks.

Once more I visited and enjoyed the food in the Riverside Food market.

The aftermath of the Christchurch earthquake some 11years ago (Feb 22nd 2011) is still evident in some areas

Alot of art projects and new building are also evident as are major tourist attractions which are starting to come back.

This is New Regent Street fortunately saved and still has the trams running through it and around the city.

I biked out to sumner and back on a beautifull day

Anytime fitness as the sign says....our motorhome “Clowning Around”
has a mountain bike on the back and a 36’ unicycle on the front....
My own interpretation of anytime fitness!

That’s all for this blog...plenty more about Christchurch will be in out next blog!

Stay safe, have fun and be creative
       People are what matter
                ...keep smiling
                         ...it’s contagious you know.
Cheers
